Abstract

This statue of St. Anthony of Padua is located in the second last chapel on the right of the central nave of San Francesco d'Assisi in Matera. Stefano da Putignano (whose signature is inscribed in the base) made this work in the second decade of the sixteenth century. It is placed in an ornately carved niche in a gold-gilded altar commissioned by Archbishop Lanfranchi in 1607. St. Anthony is barefoot and dressed in simple Franciscan robes. In composition and style the statue is quite similar to another on the same subject by the same artist located in Martina Franca in the Church of Sant'Antonio. He holds a book in his left hand, with a phrase from the Book of Wisdom, and in his right hand appears to be the sculpted stem of what was likely originally a lily. The statue is otherwise in good condition, with well-preserved polychromy. The young saint here smiles, his lips slightly parted to reveal his teeth, as he looks gently down towards devotees.
