Abstract

These partially glazed terracotta roundels ornament the portico of the Ospedale di San Paolo dei Convalescenti in Florence, designed by Michelozzo at the behest of Benino Benini, beginning in 1451 and finished in 1495, as inscribed on these portraits. The flesh tones and hair of these portraits of Benini have been left unglazed and were originally painted naturalistically, but given the exposed location, the much weaker paint has disappeared, whereas the strong glaze of the blue background remains. Andrea is known for his more idealized figures, but these are sensitive naturalistic portraits of the aging man.
