Abstract

This glazed terracotta altarpiece in the church of San Pietro in Radicofani was made by Benedetto Buglioni. The techniques of using glazed terracotta were a closely-guarded secret of the Della Robbia family, one that, according to Vasari, Benedetto stole from Andrea della Robbia. The colours, nevertheless, are different from the Della Robbia glazes. For example, the white is milkier, less brilliantly opaque, and Bendetto experiments with thinly washed glazes in pastel colours to create a landscape. This can be seen readily in comparing Benedetto's altarpiece to the three Della Robbia works in the same church.
