Abstract

This 16th-century Annunciation scene is comprised of two limestone sculptures of the Angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary. Gabriel kneels beside the Virgin, whom he has interrupted from her prayers. The Virgin, shown still at her kneeler, turns to face Gabriel and the viewer. The sculpture of Mary is considerably more worn than that of Gabriel. Whereas details of Gabriel's cloths and facial features are still visible, the folds on Mary's robes and her face have been flattened out. Perhaps this is because devotees eroded the sculpture of Mary through repeated touch over the centuries. Almost all of the original polychromy is missing, with a hint of the original colours visible only in the faded red of Gabriel's sleeve. The sculpture was originally located in the Church of Annunziatella in Matera and is now in the Museo del Cattedrale in Matera.
