Abstract

This painted terracotta relief recalls classical models, with the strict profile (with a Roman nose), the cropping of the figure into a bust, and the treatment of the hair and beard. It follows a fashion for images of illustrious men in the late quattrocento and throughout the cinquecento, but the clumsy foreshortening of the halo, large inscription floating on the background, and use of realistic polychromy all are old-fashioned in a work probably made in the late Cinquecento. This sculpture is displayed in the Museo Civico, Montepulciano. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
