Abstract

This project is comprised of two sections: a literature review and a handbook for educators. The literature review examines the role of educators for at-risk and struggling readers, how learning disabilities are diagnosed and identified in Ontario, and how to develop an effective instructional program for student with learning disabilities. The accompanying handbook is designed to provide an overview of topics examined in the literature review and practical information for teachers who have struggling readers or students with learning disabilities in their inclusive classroom. The handbook contains several blackline masters that may be reproduced covering a range of topics including: kindergarten screening, parent consultation, student interest inventory, special education referral, IEP development, IPRC meetings, as well as instructional strategies for students with dyslexia.
