Abstract
This painted wood sculpture of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus, located in the Cathedral of Alatri, is known as the Madonna del Suffragio. The Madonna del Suffragio (or Madonna of Suffrage) is a type of devotional image associated with freeing souls from suffering in Purgatory. Here, the Virgin Mary is shown standing on clouds with baby angels and a crescent moon, imagery the identifies Mary as the Woman of the Apocalypse (Revelations 12:1). Multiple websites note that the sculpture was created in 1639, without citing any sources for the date. The golden crowns of Mary and Jesus seem to be later additions.
