Abstract
This sculpture of the Madonna Adoring the Sleeping Child originated from a Venetian workshop in the mid-15th century. It was perhaps once part of a larger altarpiece. Some scholars point to its similarity to the Madonna Enthroned in the Museo Civico in San Daniele del Friuli. Although its original location is unknown, it was moved to its present location in the Chapel of the Ossuary (also known as the Chapel of the Martyrs) in the Cathedral of Otranto sometime after the chapel's construction in the early 18th century. The wooden sculpture is in good condition, with its original polychromy still intact. The sculpture is placed on the main altar, behind which the bones of 813 martyrs killed in the 1480 Ottoman attack on Otranto are visible through the glass windows of the reliquary.
