Abstract
The Black experience in Kingston has not been well documented and this has led to the erasure of local Black narratives. The dominant Kingston community is disassociated from its Black culture because it’s not represented anywhere, the Black population is small at 1.6% of the total population according to Stat Canada’s Diversity of Black Population in Canada overview. I know from personal experience that people assume I wasn’t born here and that I don’t plan to stay for long based on my brown skin. It can be isolating to feel that you are the only person navigating marginalized experiences. What I’ve realized is the importance of storytelling and how it can make folks feel like they are more part of a community when they hear each other’s stories. Accessible storytelling can also make a minority group more visible and helps frame and humanize their experiences. And that’s why I created a podcast featuring Black experiences in Kingston.
