Abstract

This report explores the shift of low income households form older pre-war housing stock into post-war periods of construction. The shift is explored by identifying four periods of construction and using period of construction in order to explore housing characteristics of low income households. The differences in household characteristics for low income households are examined for three household types, single seniors, single mothers and families. The findings suggest that there is a growing proportion of low income households in post-war periods of construction but that this trend is not affecting all three household types evenly. The shift to post-war dwelling units has also resulted in housing characteristics which have a negative impact on household welfare and health, suggesting the move is not benefitting low income households.
