Abstract

This 17th-century wooden crucifix is located in the Capella del Crocifisso in the Cathedral of Matera, the third altar on the right of the cathedral's central nave. The chapel, made of painted stone, is also from the 17th century. The crucifix is placed above a marble altar made in the first half of the 18th century by an unknown artist. The copious blood dripping from the wounds adds a note of pathos to this otherwise rather conspicuously beautiful and graceful nude.
