Abstract

This polychromed stone sculpture, found today in the Fondazione Salvatore Romano, is dated to the early fifteenth century. The work was likely created for a Franciscan community, which is suggested by the presence of St. Francis in the left foreground. The Franciscans helped to spread the cult of the Madonna della Misericordia, which was popular in central Italy and was associated with anti-plague powers.
