Abstract

In this splendid sculpture of St. Anne (Mary's mother), is signed by the wood-sculptor Michele Ferabosco and dated 1750. Anne's kneels on what looks to be a cloud and looks upward in ecstasy, her arms falling open and her drapery swept by what almost seems to be a wind of inspiration. The baldachin framing the figure is just as full of lively curving motion, and near the base, scenes from St. Anne's life are carved in relief, nestled among the volutes. Currently housed in San Michele in Pavia, this large and presumably heavy painted wood sculpture seems to have been taken on religious processions, as the baldachin and figure rest on a wooden base, which has square holes for poles, which would be used to carry this elaborate parade float in procession.
