Abstract

In the second chapel on the left of Santa Maria della Pace in Rome, known as the Chapel of the Crucifix, stands a fifteenth-century polychrome crucifix housed within a niche. The crucifix is framed by an intricate gilded stucco architectural design, attributed to Pasquale da Caravaggio and dated to 1490. Art historian Sara Cavatorti connects this crucifix to another in the Franciscan Convent of Monteripido in Perugia, suggesting a shared origin within the workshop of Giovanni Teutonico (1450–1527). She dates the Santa Maria della Pace crucifix to the 1460s, considering it part of an earlier series of works produced by this workshop.
