Abstract

This painted wood crucifix is currently displayed in front of painted wood panels with images of Mary and St. John the Evangelist at the center of what looks to be a Baroque altarpiece, inscribed with the phrase ""Altare Privilegatum,"" in Santa Maria degli Angeli in Cassano delle Murge, a pilgrimage church that was in the Renaissance the seat of Observant Franciscans and a pilgrimage destination, because of the purportedly miraculous painting in the ancient grotto on top of which the church was built. The crucifix was made by unknown artists in the fourteenth or fifteenth century. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
