Abstract

On the altar of the first chapel on the right of Santissime Stimmate di San Francesco in Rome, known as the Chapel of the Redemption and dedicated to the Passion of Christ, is an ivory crucifix set against an alabaster background. This small crucifix is attributed to Alessandro Algardi (1598–1654) and dated to the seventeenth century. Although its style resembles other ivory crucifixes by Algardi, it is not listed in Jennifer Montagu’s comprehensive catalogue raisonné of his works. The chapel was decorated in 1725 after the church was rebuilt by Pope Clement XI between 1714 and 1721. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence.
